NEW YORK (AP) — The new documentary “High & Low — John Galliano” covers all the complexities of the famous British designer, one of the most celebrated and controversial figures in the fashion industry. The Associated Press talked to Macdonald about Galliano’s rise and fall and why many friends and fans stayed loyal to him. How do we really know why someone said something? AP: Do you think Galliano feels remorse about his past comments and behavior? It feels like, “OK, I’ve got that off my chest now, now I can ... do what I’m really, really good at and express myself more personally again.”

CNN —An awards ceremony curveball indeed: Emma Stone, winner of the Oscar for Best Actress for her performance in “Poor Things,” dealt with a sartorial snafu just moments before she took the stage to accept her trophy. “My dress is broken,” Stone appeared to mouth while en route to receive her Academy Award. “I think it happened during ‘I’m Just Ken,’” she explained, referencing Ryan Gosling’s performance of his song from the “Barbie” movie — and, presumably, some dance moves she’d indulged in (because who wouldn’t boogie down with Gosling should the opportunity present itself?). And perhaps most infamously, Jennifer Lawrence, who was on stage with Stone tonight (as one of the former Best Actress winners who introduced this year’s nominees), took a tumble when accepting her Oscar for Best Actress in 2013 due to the hemline on her cascading Dior Haute Couture gown. Lawrence, along with the other former winners, helped usher Stone off-stage.

NEW YORK (AP) — Charlize Theron remembers the moment her role in philanthropy clicked into place. “We heard them say, ‘We know what to do, but we just need the resources to do it,’” Theron said Thursday at the Town & Country Philanthropy Summit in Manhattan. [1/7] A model presents a creation by designer Maria Grazia Chiuri as part of her Spring/Summer 2024 Women's ready-to-wear collection show for fashion house Dior during Paris Fashion Week in Paris, France, September 26, 2023. "It's a reflection about image, about the narrative and how we build -- in some way -- a stereotype in our mind," Chiuri told Reuters. Chiuri used knitwear techniques to lighten the weight of a pleated skirt, and took on pointy-toed kitten heels, turning them into gladiator shoes, with rows of straps running up the leg, fastened with pearls. The LVMH-owned (LVMH.PA) fashion label's show saw onlookers angle for photos of celebrities, including Blackpink member Jisoo, Charlize Theron, Elle Macpherson and Rosalia. “People think I had a facelift,” complained Charlize Theron, the star of “Monster,” “Mad Max: Fury Road” and “Fast X” in a recent interview for Allure magazine. “They’re like, ‘What did she do to her face?’ I’m like, ‘B***h, I’m just aging! It’s one thing to want a new nose, another to want to look like yourself 10 or 15 years ago. Whereas we can only assume the inspiration for someone’s redesigned features, the template for our “younger” face is right there, in our old Instagram photos and Facebook albums — or in Theron’s case, in paparazzi shots dating back several decades. What we do with our time, as opposed to how we look while we’re doing it, is the point.

The actors could be on strike themselves without a last-minute deal with studios and streaming services on Wednesday. Production of many movies and television shows have already been shut down by the current writers strike. An actors strike would bring most remaining productions to a halt, other than on some independent films not associated with studios. This would be the first actors strike against television shows and movie productions since 1980. Just before the last deadline, it seemed as if an actors strike could be avoided.

Summer movie preview 2023

CNN —Most moviegoers can pinpoint one summer movie – or perhaps, a summer of movies – in their formative years that really and truly cemented their love for going to the cinema, whether it be 1975’s “Jaws,” “E.T. And while streaming has clearly siphoned off part of the audience, particularly for more serious films, what we think of as “summer movies” still have the potential to rake in cash just like the old days. (CNN and DC are both part of the same parent company, Warner Bros. Courtesy Warner Bros. PicturesInitially meant for streaming platforms, this vehicle will herald the cinematic arrival of DC Studios’ first Latino superhero, played by Xolo Maridueña of “Cobra Kai” and “Parenthood” fame. If the fast-paced trailer is any indication, the movie looks sure to whisk those dog days of summer doldrums away quite nicely.

But by far the most all-consuming task was booking gigs for Hunter Thompson. Just before a debate with G. Gordon Liddy at Brown University, Hunter demanded that Betsy Berg, whom I now worked alongside at GTN, score him some crystal meth.

Why did Field create Tár as a lesbian rather than a straight woman, or one of the great men themselves? The decision by director and screenwriter Todd Field to make Tár a lesbian unsettled me. The film’s core is not so much about a lesbian predator but about the more general use and abuse of power, including sexual power, that Lydia wields at will. So why did Field create Tár as a lesbian rather than a straight woman, or one of the great men themselves? — “Tár on Tár,” and is soon to conduct a landmark live recording of Gustav Mahler’s “Symphony No.
If any movie released this season can be counted upon to reduce your pizza consumption, it’s “The Whale,” in which the title figure is an unfortunate 600-pound writing instructor brought to the edge of death by his own eating habits. He consumes candy by the bag and chicken by the bucket. He is on first-name terms with his pizza-delivery guy. And he’s portrayed by Brendan Fraser , whose triumphant comeback this film is meant to be, in a bid for one of those acting Oscars that really should go to the makeup and prosthetics department. Lots of screen time is spent on voyeuristic fascination with how Charlie manages; he has a handle over his bed to allow him to pull up and out of it, and he takes his shirt off so we can see the sores on his back.

'The School for Good and Evil' review
  + stars: | 2022-10-19 | by ( Review Brian Lowry | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
CNN —Although immersed in fantasy, “The School for Good and Evil” gets lost in a nether realm somewhere between Disney Channel fare like “Descendants” and more epic theatricals like Harry Potter. There’s plenty of action along the way, as well as more wasted cameos, like Patti LuPone and Michelle Yeoh. Yet if you’re going to arrive this late to the party, at least bring something significantly new to it. Granted, that’s not an easy assignment at this stage of the game, but “The School for Good and Evil” doesn’t pass the test. “The School for Good and Evil” premieres October 19 on Netflix.
